In the depths of the Fort McMurray fire, a frantic call rang out from the northern Alberta town’s main fire station. A firefighter had suffered a “shoulder injury” while making his way out of the flames and a smoke-filled building.
A strange sight waited for him on the riverbank below the fire station: a man in a grey T-shirt, shorts and glasses, rocking back and forth on the shore as if waiting for an answer.
“He was completely exhausted,” firefighter Dylan Herczeg recalled in an interview. “And he was in a state of shock. He couldn’t believe what had happened.”
The man was in his 30s. He’d been at work when the city’s fire station was engulfed in flames. He was found to be safe, but “a little rattled,” Herczeg recalled.
Herczeg had heard about the man’s plight. An experienced firefighter from the station had seen the man on the riverbank and had tried to flag him down. Herczeg was on the way to check on him when he reached him.
